A Doll's House (Et dukkehjem) is a three-act prose play by Henrik Ibsen, which premiered on 21 December 1879 at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. Published earlier that month, the play drew immediate attention and controversy for its bold critique of 19th-century marriage conventions.
The story follows Nora, a seemingly content wife and mother, who ultimately makes the radical decision to leave her husband and children in order to discover who she truly is. This conclusion shocked audiences of the time and ignited widespread debate about the roles and rights of women in society.
Ibsen wrote the play not as a statement on women’s rights, but as an exploration of the individual's need for self-discovery and authenticity. As he later explained, his work aimed to describe humanity, not promote a political cause. Nevertheless, A Doll’s House became a seminal work in both modern drama and the conversation around gender and personal freedom.
