In The Time Machine, a Victorian scientist and inventor constructs a machine that allows him to travel through time. His journey takes him to the year AD 802701, where he encounters the Eloi — a gentle, passive race living among the ruins of a once-great civilization.
Initially convinced that the Eloi represent a peaceful utopia, the Time Traveller soon discovers the existence of the Morlocks — threatening, ape-like creatures who dwell underground. To understand this divided future and find a way back to his own time, he must explore the dark world beneath the surface and confront the brutal truth of a society shaped by inequality and decay.
First published in the late 19th century, The Time Machine is not only a foundational work of science fiction that introduced the concept of time travel into popular culture, but also a sharp and lasting critique of class structures and social complacency. H. G. Wells’s visionary novel remains profoundly relevant and influential to this day.
